The shell of the boot is manufactured from buffalo leather with a soft felt lining offering protection to the delicate knee area of your horse.  There are buckle straps above and below the knee for a secure fit.  The upper semi elasticated strap fits above the knee joint and should be very snug over the joint to avoid it slipping down and the lower strap should fit loose enough to allow full free movement of the knee but not too loose that it can get caught by the other foot or other impediments.

We at www.myhorse.co.nz use knee boots ever since Nasa's accident and won't go on the road or gravel roads without them....however we do remove them on the beach and fields for any faster gallop work...just in case one should slip down...however we have cantered and trotted without any issues over the past couple of years and in the UK the racehorses had them on all the time even during gallop work...but that is for you as the owner of your precious fur baby to decide....we can only offer you the product as a protection on the nasty hard surfaces and you need to make those other decisions for yourself.  Do check the boots on your horse during riding in case they slip down...if so you need to tighten them...common sense really :)
